How do you go about finding a DJ?
Well, there are tons of things to
consider about selecting a good DJ/mobile music company. First of all, if
you have recently attended an event and you liked the DJ's that performed,
well, you might want to call them and get more information and possibly
see if they are available for your event. Otherwise the Yellow Pages and
or Internet are great places to start. Once you have reached a DJ maybe
your gut feeling and first impressions are always right. If you don't like
the personality and you thought the communication skills over the phone
were less then desirable, they are probably not your choice.
Experience:
The first thing to consider is experience. When speaking
with the DJ make sure they have experience with the type of event you
might be hiring them for. Many companies think that if a DJ has
worked in the industry for 10,15 or 20 years he or she must be good or
even great at what they do, well, that is not always true. Some of your
best DJ's are ones that have only been doing it for a few years. Sometimes
you might see a "How to hire a DJ" page similar to ours to lists part-time
DJ's verses full-time DJ's. Just because they do it part time, does NOT
mean that they are not good at what they do or very experienced. I do it
part time and I know a lot of part time DJ's that are very good. Then you
have the larger corporate companies that advertise in every phone book,
have the larger ads, several rigs, a ton of DJ's, working out of
storefronts. These are most likely reputable companies BUT sometimes
will put inexperienced people in the field to do the event that don't take
the performance to heart like many of your smaller ones will.
Service:
The DJ company that you choose, needs to work with you.
Make sure that you can get the best service that you deserve. When you
hire a DJ, you are trusting that they know what they are doing and will do
the job right, the way YOU want it. DJ's will usually have you fill out
forms. Those forms will give them necessary information regarding your
event, to make it YOUR event and customize it to your taste. We provide a
Music Request List along with an additional questionnaire to be returned.
This is YOUR event and we realize that.
Music:
Any DJ's music library, no
matter if it consists of computerized MP3's, CD's, records, tapes should
be large and accessible to the client. How many CD's do you think a DJ
should have?? Well, you could ponder about that question for days. If you
run into a DJ that has 900 CD's or one that has 350 CD's, amount does not
matter, material that he or she has with them is the key. Then not
only has but is able to locate and play. That's why we utilize the
latest in DJ computer technology. It may not be
possible for a DJ or company to list of all their music because of how
extensive their collection might be.
Sound Equipment:
The sound equipment that your DJ has should be professional
sound equipment. You will not find this type of equipment at your local
electronics store or at your local superstore. Another problem that many
people run into is that the average "Joe" will not know anything about
professional equipment as apposed to home equipment. Ask your DJ what
types of equipment that he or she has. I have listed some professional
equipment names to assist you, but they are not limited to these brands:
Carver, Crowne, Sure, Newmark, Klipsch, JBL, EV, Peavey, Denon, QSC, American DJ,
Soundtech, Genesis, Gemini, Yamaha and so on. Another good question, is
does your DJ have back up equipment in case of failure, they should have
some type of back up system. Check out or equipment under the Equipment
Page.
Lighting:
Lighting, Lighting, Lighting. The lighting can really make
a dance or break it. Again, the DJ that you hire should have professional
lighting equipment. Ask if the DJ plays the lighting system with the
music. Some DJ's just turn on a few lights and let it go. Some really get
into the music with the lighting system. We do just that. We really like
to put the right type of lighting to the music, it definitely makes a
difference. Some professional lighting companies that you might ask for
are, American DJ, Chauvet, Elation and Martin. Ask your DJ what types of lighting
he or she has. You can be assured that our sound and lighting
equipment is state of the art, high tech, well maintained and in a class
of it's own. The lighting is by far the most extensive and technical
to set up but well worth the energy it brings to the show.
Contracting:
A written contract is very important. It protects you as
well as the company you hire. Remember that this is a business and things
can go wrong and turn into a mess. A word to the wise, read your contract
over thoroughly and make sure there is no hidden costs or fine print that
might have misled you. Always make sure that the DJ/company signs the
contract. Larger companies/franchises are famous for switching around DJ's
and you may not get the DJ that signed the contract. Many companies put in
fine print somewhere on your contract that the reserve the right to switch
around DJ's without notice. Our contract is
there to provide security to our clients as well as our company. We
want you to be assured you are dealing with professionals that know and
understand the business and the importance it brings. We only have
one chance to make an impression on you and your guest. We will stop
at nothing to make it a good one! |
